JOHN JOSEPH BUETTNER born Oct. 25, 1945, and passed away Oct. 21, 2026, aged 80 years, beloved husband of the late Margaret Rose (nee Fahey) and the late Virginia M. "Ginny" (nee Landi), dear father of Beth Forst (Michael), Joseph (deceased) (Megan), David, Joyce Tamerlano (John) and Kevin (Karla), loving grandfather of Tiree, Jadzia, Xander, Christopher, Lauren, Madilyn, Riley, Isabella, Katherine, Isabella, Owen, Rafaela and Caden, devoted son of the late Elmer and Therese (nee Schreiner), cherished brother of Therese O'Leary (deceased), Mary Rickey, Paul, and Frederick, treasured uncle and great-uncle to many. John was a United States Army Veteran and member of Catholic War Vets.
John Buettner, 80, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor, passed away on October 21, 2026.

Born to the late Therese (Schreiner) and Elmer Buettner, John graduated from Chardon High School.

John proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968, receiving an honorable discharge. His commitment to his fellow veterans continued long after his military service. He was actively involved with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and dedicated much of his time to supporting veterans through the Catholic War Veterans.

John enjoyed a long and successful career with Prudential Insurance, eventually becoming a financial planner. He took great pride in his work and the relationships he built throughout his career.

John was first married to Margaret Rose (Fahey) Buettner, with whom he had five children. Following Margaret Rose's passing in 1979, John married Virginia (Landi) Buettner in 1981. Together, John and Virginia raised their five children and shared 43 years of marriage until her passing in 2024.

The year 2024 brought tremendous heartbreak to John with the loss of both Virginia and his beloved son, Joseph. Their passing left an enormous void in his life. He missed them both deeply, and their absence was felt in the quiet moments of his everyday life.

Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, John was a larger-than-life presence in more ways than one. Strong-willed, opinionated, and sometimes gruff, he was certainly a force to be reckoned with. But beneath that tough exterior was a remarkably kind and generous man. John often showed his kindness quietly, whether picking up someone's check without their knowledge, delivering fresh fruits and vegetables to those in need, or simply lending a hand when someone needed help. He rarely spoke of these gestures, and in the days following his passing, his family has been touched by the many stories shared about the ways he cared for others. His generosity reached further than even those closest to him realized.

A devoted Catholic, John attended Mass daily and was a faithful member of Communion of All Saints and St. Casimir parishes. His faith was central to his life and reflected in his commitment to helping others.

John had a lifelong love of Lionel trains, hunting, and fishing. His enthusiasm for these hobbies was just one of the many things that made him uniquely John.

John was the father of five children: Beth Forst (Michael), the late Joseph Buettner (Megan), David Buettner, Joyce Tamerlano (John), and Kevin Buettner (Karla). He was the grandfather of thirteen cherished grandchildren: Tiree, Jadzia, Xander, Christopher, Lauren, Madilyn, Riley, Isabella, Katherine, Isabella, Owen, Rafaela and Caden.

John was preceded in death by his wives, Margaret Rose (Fahey) Buettner and Virginia (Landi) Buettner; his beloved son, Joseph Buettner; and his parents, Therese and Elmer Buettner.

John will be remembered for his strong convictions, his generous heart, and the countless acts of kindness, both known and unknown, that touched the lives of those around him.
