Peter Paul Uhlir, age 90, entered into eternal life on May 20th, 2026. He was the beloved father of six - Frank (Mary Alice), Jim (Leonora), Joe (Tish), Paul (Linda), Steve (Noelle), and Harriet (Doug), and grandfather of eleven - Corah (Edson), Emmett, Joey, Evelyn, Matthew, Stevie, Lewin, Audrey, Tommy, James, and Maggie.
During the Hungarian Revolution of October 1956, Peter escaped Communist Hungary at the age of 21. Through President Eisenhower's "Operation Safe Haven," Peter was one of thousands of Hungarian refugees welcomed into the United States in 1957. With no money and no English skills, he emigrated to Cleveland, OH because of its well-established Hungarian Community. He married Mary Catherine Holleran in 1961 and helped raise their six children while building his own 'American Dream'. He stayed in Cleveland and tried to convince his sister and brothers to leave Communist Hungary. His sister Rozalia, emigrated to California, but his brothers Jozsef (deceased) and Ferenc remained in Hungary with their parents, Nandor & Rozalia (both deceased).
Peter, like his father - a master tailor in Hungary - continued to hone his tailoring skills. He first made his living tailoring for Joseph & Feiss Co. He then became the master tailor at Higbee's Co. In the late 1960s, he and his wife founded Uhlir's Tailor Loft in Mentor, and he eventually joined the Joseph A. Banks Corp. (Shaker Heights) as their master tailor. He later relocated Peter's Tailor Shop to University Heights, which continues to this day. Peter's talents were highly sought after by clients from around the country - like professional athletes, world class business executives, foreign dignitaries, and anyone else who wanted to wear his timelessly styled and exquisitely tailored clothes. His attention to detail, gentle style and sense of humor attracted - and kept - thousands of clients for well over 60 years. His excellent tailoring legacy lives on through his trainees, who still keep the shop running for his clients.
In addition to being a master tailor, Peter was an accomplished athlete; he was a competitive distance runner who trained with the Hungarian Olympic Team. He competed in many distance-running competitions, including the inaugural Revco Cleveland Marathon. He loved all animals, especially his homing pigeons, a flock of which he maintained until very recently. His life was dedicated to his work and his customers. He derived great joy while camping, fishing and boating with his family. He loved cheering on the Browns (kind-of), the Cavaliers, and the Guardians. He especially loved celebrating his kids' graduations, weddings, and his grandkids. He lived a sophisticated, but simple life. Peter touched many lives with his kindness, generosity, compassion and street wisdom. He was blessed with many lifelong friends who brought joy, love and laughter to his life.
Peter was surrounded by his greatest accomplishment when he passed - his family. If there was a textbook 'American Dream', Peter lived it.
