Setsuko Genet

SETSUKO (Jody) GENET (nee Shishido) age 94, beloved wife of Robert Genet; loving mother of Wanda Genet and Carol (Tom) Kelley, cherished grandmother to Nicolette Kelley, and dear aunt. She was preceded in death by her Father and Mother, Suekichi and Katsuko Shishido, and brothers Hideo and Eiji.

Jody was born on April 8, 1932, in Fukuoka-ken, Japan. She attended an American Methodist missionary school, where her faith took root. She met her husband, Bob, while working as a secretary Camp Zama in Yokohama, Japan where Bob served in the US Army. They were married in 1956 in Tokyo. She and her husband lived in Massillon, Ohio (Bob's hometown) from 1957 until 2023 when she and Bob moved to the Cleveland area to be closer to her daughter.

Her culture, church, and family were the cornerstone of her life. She shared the richness of Japanese heritage with her community through cuisine, customs, and traditional dress. She was member of First United Methodist Church in Massillon, Ohio since 1957 where she has maintained ongoing friendships. She found great joy in cooking, sewing, and baking, especially her beloved chocolate chip cookies, which she shared generously to express her love for others.

She will always be remembered as a selfless and generous woman whose warmth touched everyone she met. Guided by her strong faith, she faced life with grace, strength, and kindness. Whether someone knew her for a lifetime or only a brief moment, they quickly came to love and admire her kind ways. Her memory will be cherished always, and she will be dearly missed.

A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026 at 4pm at the First United Methodist Church in Massillon, Ohio. Burial will take place at Northlawn Cemetery in North Canton at a later date.
