In Loving Memory of Dr. Vincent Edward McHale, Ph.D., aged 87 years, beloved husband of the late Ann Barbara (nee Cotner), dear father of Patrick (wife Tammy Kitko), loving grandfather of Quinn (wife Celia), Kane, Cole and Kai McHale. Mr. McHale was a United States Army Veteran.
Dr. Vincent Edward McHale, professor emeritus of political science at Case Western Reserve University, grew up in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania. Known affectionately to family and friends as "Butch," a nickname he had carried since childhood, Vince devoted his life to scholarship, public service, family, and the pursuit of knowledge.
After serving three years in the United States Army, including a posting in France, Vince earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilkes College in 1964. He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1969 from Pennsylvania State University.
Vince began his academic career in 1969 as an assistant professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1975, he joined Case Western Reserve University, where he served as an associate professor, professor, and chairman of the Department of Political Science. He retired in 2014, leaving behind a distinguished career in higher education. In addition to his academic work, Vince took great pride in his work with the Central Intelligence Agency, where he contributed to projects related to foreign elections.
While his professional accomplishments were many, Vince's greatest joy was his family. He was deeply devoted to those he loved and had a particular passion for researching family history, taking great care to uncover and preserve the stories of generations past. His interests also included trains, attending bluegrass and piano performances, birdwatching, and spending time in nature.
Above all, Vince hoped to be remembered as a generous person. That simple wish speaks volumes about the man he was and the values he cherished. His legacy lives on not only through his contributions to academia and public service, but also through the family he loved, the history he preserved, and the kindness he shared with others.
He will be remembered with love, gratitude, and admiration by all whose lives he touched, especially his son, Patrick (Tammy), and grandchildren, Quinn (Celia), Kane, Cole, and Kai.In lieu of flowers, contributions suggested to Communion of Saints Parish, 2475 Coventry Rd., Cleveland Heights, OH 44118, HERE.
